Somatic Movement Education is the field of study that uses the body to understand how human experience is organized. Coined by Thomas Hanna in the twentieth century, the term derives from the Greek soma: the living, conscious body.
SME approaches the individual not merely as a physical structure, but as an experiential entity capable of self-regulation. Through perception, intuition, organic movement, and embodied anatomy, it functions as a connective tissue between thought and movement, experience and reflection, science and sensitivity.
Through specific somatic practices, we can generate and acquire new embodied knowledge, movement patterns, and psychophysical memories. Ultimately, SME is the practice of learning to observe and to observe ourselves; it means remaining open to shifts in how we perceive ourselves, the other, and, consequently, the world.
